A girl told police that a man tried to grab her near the school playground by Belmont Hill Park but she broke free, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
A Bergen County Police Department K-9 unit was dispatched to the area of the Cedar Street school to assist after the school principal called Garfield police just before 1:20 p.m., the source said.
Meanwhile, the school remained locked in place.
The immediate description was of a thin Hispanic man, about 6 feet tall, with a backpack and wearing khaki pants and a long-sleeved, light blue shirt, he said.
Another source said police detained a man who it turned out was wanted on a warrant.
It “appears coincidental at this point,” he said.
