New Jersey State Police sent a chopper, while two command posts were established — off Route 202 and in the lower parking lot — as they searched off Skyline Drive between Oakland and Franklin Lakes after the 31-year-old resident called local police threatening to kill himself.
NJ Park Police and local officers responded along with the NJSP.
They pinged the man’s cellphone, but a K9 unit didn’t find anyone in the area, they said.
The search continued throughout the night until he was finally found just before 9:30 a.m. at a nearby Franklin Lakes home, Lt. John Bakelaar said.
Oakland Detective Mark Piercy told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that his department received a report from Franklin Lakes police that the man “was possibly in a wooded area located near Skyline Drive in Oakland.”
Oakland officers assisted, along with borough firefighters and EMS members, he said.
“An extensive search of the area was conducted with negative results,” Piercy said. “It was later determined that the subject was no longer in the area.”
