UPDATE: One Night Of Damage Ruins Decade Of Restorations
Many of the tombstones "were found broken as a result of being toppled over" after the attack sometime overnight Sunday into Monday morning, Police Chief David Murphy told Daily Voice Wednesday morning.
"The church stated that the estimated cost to upright, repair and restore the stones may exceed $10,000," he told Daily Voice.
"The church is asking people to check graves if they are concerned," said Jean Mansur, whose parents are buried there.
The damage was on the Wyckoff Avenue side behind the sanctuary.
Some of the freshly-broken stones dated back to the 1850’s, Pastor Andy Kadzban told Daily Voice.
Two of the damaged stones marked the graves of infants only months old when they died. In another spot, six stones in a row were toppled.
Murphy, the police chief, asked that anyone with information about the vandalism call Wyckoff Police at (201) 891-2121.
"On a personal note, I am saddened to see such disrespect being shown to a very special place in our community and for the emotional cost to the families of those who are buried," the chief said.
