The fire at 79 Grove Street was reported at 4:50 p.m. and may have been ignited by a lit cigar, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT late last night.

Confined to the bedroom, the blaze was extinguished by Oakland firefighters, with help from Franklin Lakes and Wyckoff.

Carmine Della Bruna, a former borough auxiliary police officer, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center just about an hour later, Oakland police said in a release issued this afternoon.

Della Bruna’s wife came home during the fire and wasn’t injured, they said.
