Acting Sgt. Ryan O’Keefe and Officers Gary Fiore and Bryan Rowin found Katerina Pokrovsky of Franklin Lakes behind the wheel of a green SUV that a witness saw leave the scene of a vehicle burglary on Colgate Road just after 5 a.m. Sunday, Lt. Christian Eldridge said Monday.
She "was questioned and later admitted to the burglary as well as two others in the area," he said.
As the officers spoke with her, O'Keefe spotted several cartons of cigarettes on the back seat, Eldridge said.
Aware that someone had broken in to the Delta station at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Lakeside Boulevard in Franklin Lakes by breaking a garage door window before dawn Sunday, O'Keefe contacted his colleages there.
Overall, Pokrovsky was charged with three counts of burglary to a vehicle and theft in Oakland and burglary and theft in Franklin Lakes.
A judge ordered her released under New Jersey's 2017 bail reform law pending a hearing.
Pokrovsky made headlines in June 2014 when she announced that she was a Russian orphan adopted by a Franklin Lakes couple and planned to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise awareness and money for a non-profit that provided medical treatment to disabled children in Russian orphanages.
