Jersey City man tried to board Newark flight with handgun, ammo, police say

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Jersey City man was caught trying to bring a .38-caliber pistol and ammo in his carry-on bag onto a flight to North Carolina from Newark Airport last night, Port Authority police said.

TSA agents spotted the unloaded handgun (photo, above) and 15 rounds of ammunition as the bag passed along the checkpoint conveyor belt, the auhtority’s Joseph Pentangeo said this afternoon.

Jose A. Fernandez, 30, of Winfield Avenue was being held on $50,000 bail in the Essex County Jail, charged with illegal weapons possession.
