Christopher J. Batis, 42, of Stormville, NY was driven to the West Main Street business by his father yesterday “in an attempt to collect an alleged debt that was owed to someone else,” Police Chief Benjamin Fox said..
Batis was waiting for the owner and demanded $7,000 when he showed up for work at 7 a.m., the chief said.
The owner refused, Fox said, and Batis responded: “This is not the way it works” and “You won’t like the next visit.”
Responding officers found Batis carrying a fully loaded .380-caliber handgun, along with a piece of paper containing the business owner’s home address and the names of his wife, children, parents, sister and even his dog, the chief said.
Batis was being held on $85,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with illegal weapons possession while attempting to collect money and making threats, possession of a weapon with the intent to use it unlawfully, attempted theft by extortion and making threats, possession of marijuana and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
His father wasn’t charged.
