Franklin Lakes Thieves Take $4,100 From Unlocked Truck, Jeep With Key In It

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. -- One Franklin Lakes resident reported $4,100 stolen from his unlocked pickup truck, while another said someone took her Jeep -- after she left the key inside -- police said Tuesday.

Franklin Lakes police arrested two men this week in unrelated matters -- a Paterson man for child support and a Maplewood man for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the high school parking lot.

Whoever was responsible for the overnight pickup truck burglary Tuesday on Haven Road also took a laptop and various forms of identification, along with a passport, but tossed them on a neighbor's lawn, Capt. John Bakelaar said.

A mile and a half away, a Highwoods Drive resident reported her 2016 Jeep swiped from the driveway.

"The key fob had been left in the vehicle," Bakelaar said.

“Lock you vehicles," the captain urged citizens, "and don’t leave valuables in them overnight."
