Officer Kyle Ferreira spotted the car stopped at a green light at the intersection of Godwin Avenue and Franklin Avenue before dawn Nov. 27.
Tyler Speziale was asleep, his head on the steering wheel, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said this afternoon.
Speziale “did not respond to the blowing of the horn or the siren of the police car,” Fox said. “[I]t then took about 30 seconds for the driver to respond with the officer knocking on the window.”
Speziale was charged with DWI, failing to submit to a breath test, reckless driving and failing to observe a traffic signal.
He was released to his father’s custody pending a Municipal Court hearing, the chief said.
Last year, Speziale eluded police for nearly a week before surrendering to face several drug possession charges — including for amphethamine and prescription medications — as well as counts of criminal mischief with damage.
They found that Speziale “had been in an argument with his parents, during which he caused considerable damage” to their car, as well as doors and windows in their house, the chief said.
Speziale then took off on foot, he said.
The officers found pot and various other drugs during a search of his bedroom, along with syringes, a digital scale and baggies ordinarily used for packaging and selling narcotics on the street, Fox said.
A warrant was then issued for Speziale’s arrest.
He surrendered at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, then posted $25,000 bail 10 days after the arrest — after it was reduced from $150,000 — and was released from the Bergen County Jail.
