Virginia Whitney, 52, Of Oakland

OAKLAND, N.J. – Virginia Whitney, a resident of Oakland, died Saturday, June 11. She was 52.

Born Virginia Tone in Bucharest, Romania, she was married to Jeffrey Whitney for more than 12 years. They moved back to Oakland in 2006, and she became a U.S. citizen in 2009.

She had a master’s degree on communications and public relations from the David Olgivy School in Bucharest. After the fall of communism in Romania, she became the first office director for the new DHL Romania.

She then worked for almost 10 years as director of government relations for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, at that time the largest investor in Romania. She founded an events planning company, Royal Events, which became very successful.

She disbanded this company in 2006, when she moved to the USA. She took up volunteer work with children at Bethany Church in Wyckoff and with international outreach at Times Square Church in New York.

She is survived by her daughter, Mihaela; son, Shane; husband, Jeffrey; and several beloved relatives in the USA, Romania and Europe.

Family and friends can visit from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland. A funeral service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.
