Ruth Ackerly, 84, Of Oakland

OAKLAND, N.J. -- Ruth Ackerly, 84, of Oakland, died Sept. 2. She was 84. 

Ackerly was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Richfield Park. 

She was employed by Bendix Aviation in Teterboro. Before she retired, she was employed by the Oakland School System for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Oakland First Aid Squad and enjoyed many trips with the Oakland Seniors. She passionately dedicated her time knitting more than 2,000 hats for premature babies at a local hospital. She enjoyed family vacations, bingo and was a soap opera fan. 

She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Madeline Kistner; son, Guy Richard; and grandson, Guy Christopher. 

She is survived by his husband, Edward; sons, Edward Jr. and John; grandchildren, Steven, Graham, Craig and Erin; and great-grandchildren, Kylie, Steven, Randall and Khloe. 

There will be a funeral liturgy at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 25 Purdue Ave., Oakland followed by entombment at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa. Visiting hours will be from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oakland First Aid Squad.
