Philip Damato, 89, Of Franklin Lakes

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. – Philip Damato, a resident of Franklin Lakes, died Thursday, April 14. He was 89.

He was born in Paterson and lived in Wyckoff before moving to Franklin Lakes many years ago.

Along with his wife Margaret, they were both longtime parishioners of St. Elizabeth RC Church, Wyckoff. His work ethic was instilled in him at the age of 11 when he began working for his father’s business, Joseph Damato Paperstock Corp., established in Paterson in 1922. He had the gift to be a very successful entrepreneur carrying on the family business until his retirement in 2009.

He also served as president of Cortina Ristorante in Paterson. He was a well-known member of the Italian Circle, a social club that did many good deeds for the Paterson Community. Members of the Italian Circle met in the same building that is now Cortina’s Restaurant.

He is survived by his wife Margaret; and his son Joseph Damato.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Damato.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff. Interment will follow in Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 381 Main St., Paterson, NJ 07505 or St. Elizabeth RC Church, Angel Fund, 700 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
