And a half-century later, Dargenzio is still at it.

The letter carrier, who lives in Allendale with his wife, was recently honored by senior postal executives for his 50 years of service.

During a special ceremony on the work floor of the Franklin Lakes Post Office, U.S. Postal Service Northeast Area Vice President Edward Phelan presented Dargenzio with a 50-year pin and congratulatory letter from Postmaster General Megan Brennan.

Dargenzio told Daily Voice that two of the best parts of his job are spending time outside and getting to know the people on his route.

Some of those people are “like family,” he said. After all, “I had this one since January 1980,” he said of his current route.

When asked if anything odd or exciting has happened in his years of delivering mail, he said, “once in a while you get bit by a dog.” But, “they are only doing their job,” he added.

Dargenzio said he has no immediate plans to retire.

“He is a great employee … I tell him to stay as long as he wants,” said Franklin Lakes Postmaster Robert Zwier.

Before starting his postal career, Dargenzio served in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer.
