Med School Student Center Named For Westfield's Dr. Derrick Nelson The late principal of Westfield High School widely praised for his service in the military and for his dedication to the students in his charge has received another honor, a Roseland law firm announced Thursday.  Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, which is located at Seton Hall University in South Orange, has named its student life center for Derrick Nelson, who died in April after he fell into a coma following a bone-marrow transplant procedure. Family Of Beloved Westfield Principal Suing Hospital Over His Death Family of the Westfield High School principal who died following an attempt to harvest his bone marrow for donation are suing Hackensack University Medical Center.  Derrick Nelson, a 20-year veteran of the Army reserves,  was planning on making the donation to a French teenager. But the magnanimous gesture turned tragic when Nelson, 44, fell into a coma early this year. He died in April.  His fiance is now suing HUMC and a physician, attorney David Mazie of Roseland said. Flags To Be Lowered For Westfield Principal Who Died After Marrow Donation Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered that U.S. and state flags be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Dr. Derrick Nelson, the principal of Westfield High School who died April 7 following a bone marrow donation several weeks earlier.  "Dr. Derrick Nelson represented the best of our state and our country,” Murphy said in a statement. “He spent over 20 years in the United States Army, including time in the Middle East.
