At 4:06 p.m., Berkeley Heights police responded to the 400 block of Park Avenue and quickly determined the child was seriously injured, officers said on Facebook. A New Jersey State Police medevac helicopter was initially requested but was unable to land due to inclement weather, police said.

The child was transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance where he is in critical but stable condition, police said. The adult was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Police are investigating why the vehicle led off the roadway, officers said. The driver remained on his scene and his vehicle was impounded pending a mechanical investigation, police said.
