Denzel Castro, 18, was arrested while trying to flee the Grant Terrace break-in on a stolen bicycle, Acting Police Chief Robert Carney said this afternoon.
Police later found 19-year-old Solomon Aluko, who drove off in a Mercedes Benz following the 5:30 p.m. burglary, in which a basement door was forced open, Carney said.
Officer Randy Morales had seen the Mercedes leave the area as he responded to the burglary call.
Officer Matthew Sanchez also reported seeing two men run from him as he approached them on Lucy Avenue, the chief said.
Bergen County Police sent two tracking dogs, who helped Officer John Thornton catch Castro, Carney said.
During the search, a George Street resident called police and reported finding electronic items in his trash can — proceeds from the Grant Terrace break-in, the chief said.
While checking out that report, officers found the Mercedes parked nearby, Carney said.
They seized the car — and Aluko when he went to headquarters to pick it up, he said.
He “admitted to being the driver of the vehicle at the time of the burglary,” the chief said.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification collected and processed evidence.
Castro was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, and hindering arrest “for giving false information when stopped,” the chief said.
Aluko was charged with burglary, theft and tampering with evidence for the “discarded proceeds in the garbage can,” Carney said.
Castro was being held on $10,000 bail and Aluko on $5,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a Municipal Court appearance this Monday.
