The target of the shooting told police the incident began when both men began following him “for an unknown reason” while was he was at the Garden State Plaza earlier in the day, Detective Lt. Andrew McGurr said.
Around 7 p.m., both began chasing him on foot from Route 4, leading him to jump into a car occupied by a couple he knows and their 2-year-old child, McGurr said.
That’s when one of the two assailants “stopped in the middle of the roadway and began shooting at the vehicle with a handgun,” the lieutenant said. No one was hit, he said.
However, the driver floored it in reverse up Congress Avenue before it struck a parked car.
Police called on a report of shots fired found both cars and the occupants near Robinson Street, McGurr said.
Police soon after found Jarrell Stone (top, right) and Bruce Loo (left), both of Pomona, N.Y., hiding behind a building on Minell Place, the lieutenant said. Witnesses later identified them, he said.
A few hours later, a local resident reported finding a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun believed used in the shooting. It was being matched against seven shell casings of the same caliber found in the street on Congress Avenue, McGurr said.
Stone, 26, the alleged shooter, is charged with attempted murder, in addition to a trio of illegal weapons counts. Loo, 19, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Both were ordered held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail following a Municipal Court appearance this morning.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Identification collected and is processing the shell casings. The Bergen County Police Department sent two K9 teams to assist with the search.
