Members of the Narcotics Squad positioned their vehicles to block the car from backing into the street from the Best Stop convenience store on Cedar Lane on Friday, Police Chief Robert Carney said Tuesday.

In the 2009 Mercedes ML350 -- reported stolen out of South Hackensack the day before -- they found the marijuana and a $395 sweater from Macy's with a replaced price tag of $13, Carney said.

The driver -- Floyd W. Gaines Jr., 47, of Teaneck -- also was carrying the credit card in addition to a pair of bogus $50 bills, he said.

"Gaines ultimately admitted that the vehicle was stolen and claimed ownership of the suspected marijuana," the chief said.

The passenger, Abdulazee O. Salawu, admitted to the theft from the Garden State Plaza Macy in Paramus earlier in the evening, Carney said.

While in the store, he told them, he removed the higher price tag and replaced it, the chief said.

Gaines was ordered held on $5,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a Nov. 30 first appearance on charges of receiving stolen property, credit card theft and money laundering. He also received a summons for marijuana possession.

Salawu was released pending further investigation by the Paramus Police Department for his role in the theft from Macy’s, Carney said, adding that Paramus police were notified.
