A couple had caught Christopher Wynne of Hamburg rummaging through their next-door neighbor’s purse as he stood in their driveway when they arrived home Tuesday night, Detective Lt. Frank Ramaci said.
Wynne “said he was just trying to find information inside the purse so he could return it to the rightful owner,” then “dropped the purse and walked away hurriedly,” he said.
A search of the area proved fruitless.
Two hours later, the victim’s husband told police his wife’s credit card had been used at a local supermarket.
Officers reviewed the store’s video surveillance system and saw Wynne using the card, Ramaci said.
They also responded to a second report of a lost or stolen purse a few blocks from the original incident — and issued a Be On the Lookout alert for Wynne, he said.
A few hours later, police got a call from State Police, who’d arrested Wynne driving a car reported stolen out of Teaneck, the lieutenant said.
He was carrying items that could be traced back to the New Milford victims, he said.
Yesterday, a third borough victim reported that his car had been entered and person items taken — which Ramaci said Wynne had when he was arrested.
Wynne was being held on $150,000 bail, charged with three counts each of burglary and theft out of New Milford and various credit card theft and fraud offenses.
