Resident robbed by phony sheriff’s officers

Men masquerading as county sheriff’s officers convinced a midtown North Bergen resident to let them in, then robbed him overnight, the victims told police.

It happened around 1 a.m. on Meadowview Avenue, just north of 61st Street, they said.

Police said the trio were let in after they knocked on the door and flashed badges. They then bound the man with plastic handcuffs, kept his wife and another relative at bay in another room, and made off with his wedding band and a laptop.

Police haven’t released descriptions of the robbers yet.

Police always remind citizens that they have the right to verify the identity of anyone who comes to their home or tries to stop them in their car. And legitimate officers will always be the first to tell you that they must wait while you call and verify who they are — you can even request a uniformed police car be sent. They do not have a right to do anything until your request is honored.
