TEANECK, N.J. -- A Teaneck house fire led to the discovery of four pounds of heroin and 16 pounds of marijuana, more than $65,000 combined, and the arrests of two men, authorities said Monday.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the 9:05 p.m. Thursday blaze on Lindberg Boulevard, which caused some damage, Police Chief of Police Robert A. Carney said.

One of the responders, Police Officer Michael Scalise, spotted pot, pills and drug sale packaging in the home, the chief said.

At that point, police took Humberto M. Cabrera and Shamir Cortorreal-Munoz into custody while detective obtained a search warrant.

The found the pot and heroin, along with $1,839 in suspected drug proceeds, packaging for heroin and 33 stamps "to label, identify and market the packaged heroin," Carney said.

Police also seized a Volvo that had a motorized hidden compartment under the front passenger seat -- which was empty at the time, the chief said.

Both men were being held on $750,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, charged with maintaining/operating a drug facility, distributing heroin and marijuana and doing it in a school zone, among other offenses.

Teaneck fire officials were still investigating the cause of the blaze.
