Englewood police got help from their Teaneck colleagues in subduing and holding 53-year-old Larry Dungey in the wake of Thursday night’s assault, which left the victim with a slash on his hand.
They also recovered the weapon, a six-inch knife, Detective Capt. Tim Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Dungy was walking the dogs off their leashes on Shepard Avenue, near the Teaneck border, when they jumped on the 22-year-old neighbor as he sat on the porch, Torell said.
As both men argued, he said, Dungey pulled out the knife and lunged at the man.
The victim “was stabbed in his hand, but wrested the knife from him,” Torell said.
After a friend of the neighbor’s arrived, a second fight broke out, he said.
Two Teaneck detectives who were in the area broke up the fight and seized the knife until Englewood officers arrived, Torell said.
“This kind of cooperation between our two departments is not unusual,” he said. “Getting to this type of call quickly and getting combatants separated is what we do.
“It’s dangerous work,” Torell added. “Who knows what could have happened if not for the quick response and getting that knife out of the equation?”
Dungey remained held on $55,000 bail this morning in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault and various weapons counts — including being a felon in possession of one.
