"Suspecting that the male was not a real police officer, the [woman] said she drove away from the stop," Police Chief Robert A. Carney said.
The impersonator got back into his car and drove off in a different direction, she told police.
The woman said she was headed north when a blue, four-door vehicle -- possibly a Ford Taurus -- pulled behind her near Dearborn Street around 11 a.m. Saturday.
The driver then activated a blue emergency light on his dashboard, she said.
The woman told police she pulled to the side of the road and he parked his vehicle in front of hers, Carney said.
Holding his hand on a gun holstered on his hip, the impersonator told her she'd been speeding, she said.
The woman told police she then took off, the chief said.
She described him as white, in his 40s, about 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, with a dark buzz cut and dark eyes. He also had a scar next to his left eye. He was wearing a black Carhartt sweatshirt with a gold zipper, a white undershirt, and dark-colored pants, she said.
