The service will present Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 30, "Freue dich, erlöste Schar" -- "Rejoice, Redeemed Flock" -- which he wrote for the the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.
Carol Weber, Grace Concert Choir director, called it "one of the finest Bach ever wrote," saying it "pulsates with life and joyful energy throughout." The festive opening and closing choruses are accompanied by ample orchestra: three trumpets, timpani, two flutes, two oboes, string ensemble and continuo. It contains beautiful arias, as well, which will be sung by soloists soprano Hye Young Kang of Fort Lee, mezzo soprano Apryl Helder of Fair Lawn and baritone Robert Prowse of Emerson.
Also featured on the program will be Tomaso Albinoni's "Oboe Concerto in D Minor," performed by Teaneck resident Sarah Davol.
Singers from 13 area churches will also collaborate in the event. Participating instrumentalists include violinists Lisa Steinberg of Norwood and Gabriel Schaff of Harrington Park; violist Louis Day of Paramus; flutists Reva Youngstein of Teaneck and Elise Carter of Lodi; oboists Sarah Davol of Teaneck and Marsha Heller of Leonia; trumpeter Dominic Derasse of Dumont; and Scott Price of St. James Episcopal Church, Upper Montclair, on continuo organ.
Guests may make a freewill offering to support Bach Vespers during the service. A light dessert will follow.
