JCP&L Will Trim Trees Along 3,400 Miles Of Power Lines To Reduce Outages
Jersey Central Power & Light is planning to trim trees to protect more than 3,400 miles of power lines across the Garden State, officials said. JCP&L will clear trees as part of a $32.5 million plan to prevent power outages during severe weather, the company said in a news release on Wednesday, Apr. 10. It's the first part of an annual $1.5 million increase in tree-trimming costs as part of a settlement with the state Board of Public Utilities. A cold front moving across the region is being accompanied by a rapidly moving line of showers and isolated thunderstorms, some of which are expected to be severe, with damaging winds that could cause power outages. Tornado Watch Issued Across 16 New Jersey Counties
The National Weather Service on Thursday afternoon issued a tornado watch across 16 New Jersey counties. The watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. across Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties. The watch -- less severe than a warning -- was also issued for most of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Army Vet Struck Dead By Lighting While Playing Golf In Pennsylvania
Severe weather has claimed the life of a Pennsylvania man, who was struck by lightning during a round of golf. Joseph Slivinski, 71, of Lackawanna County, was struck by lightning while playing golf on Friday at Pine Hills Golf Course, according to the county coroner. Slivinski was attempting to find shelter when he was fatally injured, he died at the golf course around 1:30 p.m. A South Jersey golfer was struck and killed by lightning last month.
