Eleven people were displaced by a massive fire Easter weekend in Sussex County, officials said. Multiple fire companies responded to 39 Halsted St. in Newton around 10:45 a.m. Saturday, March 30 for a house fire with possible entrapment, responders said. It was later determined that no one was inside the home. Three Powerball players in North Jersey had quite the lucky Saturday. The tickets, sold in Rochelle Park, Branchburg and Newton, matched four of the five numbers plus the red Powerball in the drawing held on Saturday, March 23, winning $50,000. Two suspects remain at large after they brandished a boxcutter while taking merchandise from a Sephora in Morris Plains on Sunday, Jan. 28, authorities said. At 7:14 p.m., two men entered the Sephora store within Kohl's Department Store at 1711 Route 10 East and took $1,700 worth of merchandise, Morris Plains police said. The duo were confronted by store employees while leaving the store but one of the suspects brandished a boxcutter and they exited the store, police said. A former longtime local school board member from Sussex County was killed when her pickup truck veered off the road and slammed into a tree Wednesday night, State Police confirmed. Tina Larsen, a 54-year-old mother of three from Newton, was headed west on Swartswood Road (Route 622) in Fredon when NJSP Detective I Jeffrey Lebron said the Dodge crashed off the right shoulder shortly before 9:30 p.m. March 6. Subcontractor Stole Garage Doors After Dispute With Contractor: Byram Township PD
In a dispute between a contractor and a subcontractor in Sussex County, the garage door was the real victim. A 46-year-old Newton subcontractor was arrested after he uninstalled garage doors following an argument with a contractor on Wednesday, Jan. 10 in Byram Township, police said. Officers responded to a report of stolen garage doors at a residence on Ranger Trail when they discovered Vincent Sciroppo, the subcontractor had absconded with the garage doors following the tiff, police said. Sciroppo was charged with burglary and theft and released pending a court date.

The New Jersey school district in the town that got the most snow in the state over the weekend, and some in those around it, will operate on a delayed schedule Monday, Jan. 8. A 64-year-old man using a wheelchair was seriously injured after being struck by two cars while crossing Route 206 early on Wednesday, Nov. 28, state police said. DWI Newton Motorcyclist Arrested After Crash With Deer In Byram Twp: Cops
A DWI motorcyclist was cited after a crash with a deer on Friday, Oct. 13 in Sussex County, authorities said. Adam C. Ralli, 32, of Newton, had struck a deer and appeared to be intoxicated when Byram Township police officers arrived on scene at Roseville Road around 10:45 p.m., Byram police said. Ralli failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested and transported to the station where he consented to and failed two breath tests.
