A hiker from New Jersey complaining of chest discomfort and breathing problems collapsed and died while hiking in the Catskills last weekend, officials said. The man was identified by the Times Union as Ravi K. Vegiraju, 50, of Morganville. The incident happened in Greene County in the hamlet of Lanesville around 8:50 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 16. Hiker Suffers Medical Emergency Several Miles Into Delaware Water Gap Hike
A woman had to be rescued and taken to a nearby trauma center after falling during a hike on the Delaware Water Gap Thursday morning, authorities said. The Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company was one of several crews that responded to the report of a fallen hiker about four miles north on the Appalachian Trail from the Dunnfield Creek Parking Area on Route 80, the squad said. Crews initially met at the Dunnfield Creek Lot before moving to Old Mine Road, where they directly accessed the trail. A murder victim whose body was found last week at Eagle Rock Reservation has been identified as a 31-year-old man from New York City, authorities announced. Kelsey Steels' body was discovered by hikers along a trail inside of the West Orange on Friday, March 4, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, said. Lost 18-Year-Old Hikers Rescued From Woods Along Palisades Trail
Responders rescued two 18-year-old hikers who got lost in the woods along the Palisades after dark. Palisades Interstate Parkway police were joined by various rescuers who helped find the pair near the State Line Lookout in Alpine shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday. These included Alpine firefighters and members of the Closter Ambulance & Rescue Corps with a rescue truck and ATV. A 21-year-old New Jersey man is recovering at home after he was bit by a copperhead snake, landing him in the hospital for three days. Search Continues For Missing Appalachian Trail Hiker John Dunnam
Police in Pennsylvania on Sunday were still looking for missing hiker John Dunnam. Dunnam, 57, was last seen Tuesday in a section of the Appalachian Trail, PA State Police say. Particularly, Dunnam was near Chimney Rocks between the Deer Lick Shelter and the Rocky Mountain shelters when he was last seen, authorities said. He was wearing a gray shirt, blue hiking pants, carrying a green backpack and two trekking poles, state police said. If seen, call 717-249-2121 or 911.

Emergency crews from Morris County ventured deep into the woods and crossed the Boonton Reservoir to rescue an injured hiker Monday afternoon. The Montville Police Department dispatched the Montville Fire Department and the First Aid Squad to Pyramid Mountain after receiving a report of the lost hiker shortly before 1 p.m., authorities said. Members of the Westchester County Police Marine Unit, Palisades Interstate Park police and Piermont EMS and firefighters united to rescue a Fort Lee hiker trapped on the Palisades above the Hudson River, authorities said. The victim, 50, tripped and injured her arm while hiking Sunday along an unmarked trail in Alpine, PIP Police Lt.
