"As he pointed out, he lived for 40 years without the cancer and the cancer never lived without him," his obituary reads. "When he died, the cancer died, so in the end he won his battle."

More than $16,600 had been raised as of June 24 on a GoFundMe in honor of Chmura.

The Roxbury native was diagnosed with lung cancer and shortly after, received news that it metastasized to his bones. He fought against it for 44 days, family said.

Those who knew Chmura said he was one of the nicest and friendliest people.

"A friend to all, Chris never met a stranger," said Nora Tufford, the GoFundMe founder.

"You were one of the best people I've ever met," another said on his obituary.

"I have never met anyone with the easy will and personality you possessed, the effortless ability to just chill and be positive and genuine."

Chmura is survived by his wife, CeAnna; their children Anthony (Onipenco), Brayden and Candace; his parents Lois and Ed Chmura; siblings Heather and Craig Chmura of Roxbury; and countless friends and loved ones.
