Carlos Alexis Perez Gaytan, 24, was thrown from the back right passenger’s seat and killed in the Somerset County crash on Somerset Street on Sunday morning, August 27, Daily Voice reported.
The driver, Amitoj Oberoi, an off-duty police officer in Edison, was charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, DWI, and other offenses.
Born in New Brunswick, Carlos spent time in Jamesburg and New Brunswick before settling in Franklin Township, his obituary says.
He attended New Brunswick Public Schools and graduated from Franklin Township High School, where he was a standout member of the football and wrestling teams.
Carlos worked for Taylor Oil in Somerville as a driver.
He loved spending time with his friends and family and and leaves an everlasting legacy of hard work and loyalty to all those who knew and loved him.
“Carlos was fiercely loyal to his friends and family, reliable and a hard worker,” reads his obituary.
Carlos is predeceased by his grandparents, Maria Concepcion Perez-Ochoa, Victor Manuel Perez, and Jose Gaytan. He leaves behind his loving parents, Euligio and Elida Perez; his siblings, Jonathan and Yainely; his grandmother, Carmen Mendoza; and many close friends.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe launched out of Old Bridge for Carlos’ funeral expenses had surpassed $8,100 in donations out of a $25,000 goal in just two days.
“Carlos was a person with many values and a member of a hard-working and honest family,” reads the campaign, translated into English. “I am sure that with your help and mercy we will be able to reach the proposed goal.”
Carlos’ memorial was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 2 at Gleason Funeral Home in Somerset.
