Report: Paterson Charter Schools Better Off Than Public Schools

PATERSON, N. J. -- A new report from a Newark-based education advocacy group is furthering the debate about charter schools by noting the four Paterson charter schools are better off financially than the local public school district, according to NorthJersey.com.

The Community Charter School of Paterson is one of four charters in town. A new report says charter schools have surplus money while the public schools are struggling.

The Education Law Center's recent report points to a combined $6 million in surplus money for the four charter schools while the local district went through layoffs to ease its financial struggle, NorthJersey.com reported.

The main problem, according to the report, is the state is not applying the 2 percent cap on school district fund balances to charter schools, the story said. Local school district officials say this shows favoritism to charters, NorthJersey.com said.
