"Bed bugs are a nuisance, but they are not known to cause or spread disease," Kattak said. "Bed bugs are often unknowingly brought into the school by building occupants or visitors."
In the first classroom, a pest control specialist identified ways to treat the classroom, including discarding classroom carpets. Monitors were placed in the classroom last Friday, and a K9 pest-detecting unit inspected the school's classrooms, hallways and stairwells -- and found no evidence of bed bugs.
A second, single bug was found in a second classroom, but the pest control company didn't find any additional ones. As a protective measure, students' belongings in those two classrooms will be placed in bags during the school day.
The school has contacted local health officials, who will stay in communication with the school and families. They will also contact affected students' parents or guardians, and schedule a home visit. But the source of the insects often can't be determined, since they can be found in places ranging from homes and hotels to airplanes and hospitals.
