Wayne Police Say DWI Driver Made Bogus 911 Call To Divert Them

WAYNE, N.J. — A Morris County woman called in a bogus report of an assault outside a local restaurant so that she and a companion could leave another bar without being arrested for DWI, Wayne police charged.

Hayley Oates, 25, Lake Hiawatha also posted a social media comment that said: “lmao.. 2 mins later the cop peals out..silly piggies tricks r for u,” according to Wayne Police Capt. Lawrence Martin.

Officers who responded to Mother's Ale House on a report Monday night of a female being attacked in the parking lot didn't find anything, Martin said.

Detective Sgt. Robert Simpson and Detective Dave Collins soon discovered what really happened and arrested Oates, he said.

They later released Oates on a court summons charging her with filing false reports to law enforcement and creating a false public alarm, the captain said.

"Falsely creating a situation that requires officers to execute emergency response, indicating that an event exists that’s a threat to life or property is inexcusable and reprehensible behavior," Martin stated.

The captain recalled a Nov. 22, 1993 incident in which Paramus Police Officer Vincent Brock died in a crash while responding to a false call of a shooting at the Garden State Plaza.

"That horrible memory resonates in our minds and drives our response to this harassment of the law enforcement and public safety community," he said.
