Officers assigned to the township's busiest intersections will issue tickets to drivers who don't yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, Lt. Daniel Daly of the department's Traffic Bureau said Tuesday afternoon.
The safety program, which began this week and is set to run through May, is designed to educate motorists and pedestrians about safely sharing the roads, Daly said.
About 150 pedestrians are killed annually in traffic-related crashes on New Jersey roadways, the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety reports.
Current law required motorists to stop – and remain stopped – for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
The law also requires pedestrians to observe traffic signals, use the crosswalks, and yield the right of way to traffic if they aren't within a crosswalk.
Failure to do so can also lead to tickets, Daly said.
