Jaime Vega, 43, and Kohvahck C. Gonnel-Cruz, 26, both of Albany, New York, were arrested around 1 p.m. Wednesday and charged with possession, intent to distribute, and intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.

Detectives saw Vega and Gonnel-Cruz's vehicle speeding out of Paterson's Third Ward and stopped them near Masidon and Third avenues, Berdnik said.

Police found 1,450 glassine envelopes of heroin in the trunk of their car, he said.

Vega and Gonnel-Cruz were held at Paterson Police Department with bail pending, the sheriff said.

"These are significant arrests and a large confiscation of narcotics," Berdnik said. "... If you travel in Passaic County for the purpose of buying narcotics, you will be arrested."
