For almost 20 years, Wayne Counseling and Family Services has offered a free Women in Transition program.

The service helps women who recently experienced a drastic life change such as divorce, death of a spouse or ending an abusive relationship. Program coordinator Kate McAteer said about 100 newcomers participate each year.

"We have a very individualized approach to what women's needs are," McAteer told Daily Voice. "It's not like a school with a set calendar. Our goal is to help women ... move on primarily to financial self-sufficiency."

Most of the women are in their mid-40s and 50s, McAteer said. Most are from Passaic County but it is open to anyone in the state.

The transition program helps at a time where many of them need to find new sources of income after a sudden life change.

The program takes two approaches. Lauren Hout teaches job training such as computer and social media classes. She also offers tips on finding jobs.

McAteer helps women cope with stress and anxiety.

Keeping the course free is essential given the financial situations of the people who come to them for help, the coordinator said.

"It is difficult these days, it's so hard to reach out for help when you need it," McAteer said.
