In a letter to the preservation office, Goldberg said the synthetic turf could be an encroachment on the 115-acre historic park, which is listed on the national and state registers of historic sites.
The preservation office has 30 days to decide. If it determines the project constitutes an encroachment, the State House Commission could be asked to weigh in on the project, which may take until April, borough engineer Stephen Boswell told NorthJersey.com.
The synthetic turf field, an estimated $1 million project, would be at the southern-most end of the park, where there is an existing soccer field.
Critics said the design would not blend in with the park’s natural landscape.
