Fire Company No. 2 will host a blood and platelet drive on Monday, Nov. 2, in honor of George Lodder.A former captain and lieutenant with the department, Lodder was diagnosed with stomach cancer this year. He overcame lung cancer a year ago.

The blood drive will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Lafayette Avenue firehouse.

"He wanted to be able to find a way to help others and thank the doctor somehow," Lodder's son, Travis, told Daily Voice, "and [the doctor] told him platelets are like gold."

Travis said his father remains upbeat and determined to defy the odds.

Members of the department ask about or visit George Lodder all the time, his son said.

"They say the fire department is like a second family," he said. "It's the brotherhood and sisterhood. It has been incredible how much of a family the department has been for us."

George Lodder served as the safety officer prior to his illness. He was also an EMT and fire instructor for Passaic County.
