The revised maps, used by insurance companies to determine flood risk, expand the current risk areas, requiring more property owners to purchase flood insurance.

FEMA representatives will be available at the Thursday, Sept. 17 meeting from 4 to 8 p.m. to explain the preliminary flood maps and help residents and business owners determine their revised risk based on interactive maps.

Local and county officials will also be on hand to answer questions. Concerned citizens are encouraged to stop in at any time.

Passaic County is required to adopt updated maps to continue participating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which makes flood insurance available to the community.

Residents are encouraged to bring their elevation certificates and/or flood insurance policies to get more information about how their policy may change due to new maps and recent insurance reforms.

FEMA also recently extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review to Oct. 15. Information about disaster-related recovery efforts and outstanding insurance claims will not be available at the meeting.

The FEMA Community Outreach meeting will be held at Passaic County Public Safety Academy, 300 Oldham Road, Wayne.
