The presentation was in honor of Women's History Month.
"One of the things that I love about portraying Annie Oakley is that she's not what people have come to expect," Hanley said.
She contrasts the real-life Oakley with the character presented in the 1950 film "Annie Get Your Gun." Hanley is pleased to be able to present audiences with "her real story, as opposed to the pop stories that have grown up, after she died.
"Oakley was very sober, hard-working and dedicated," Hanley said, "and she had a beautiful relationship with her husband."
The presentation was produced by the American Historical Theatre and sponsored by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities: Horizons Speakers Bureau.
