Hobart was married to Garret Hobart, who was vice president to William McKinley, America's 25th president. Her husband died of heart failure before his term was up, but while Hobart was in Washington, she played a prominent role as White House hostess, because First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley suffered from epilepsy.

Hobert returned to Paterson after her husband's death, and she was active in community affairs.
