Feds: $250,000 In Mailed NJ Checks, Money Orders Stolen, Cashed By NYC Crew
More than $250,000 worth of checks and money orders were stolen from post office mailboxes in North Jersey by a group of thieves from the Bronx who quickly converted them to cash, federal authorities said.
Crew members operated for nearly 14 months, stealing checks and money orders from the mail, altering them, depositing them into bank accounts and withdrawing the proceeds before the victims discovered the fraud. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.
Jose Lopez Blanco, 22, got them access to the mailboxes with a U.S. Postal Service master key, Carpenito said.

Wayne PD: Officer Nabs Mail Thieves With Hundreds Of Stolen Checks, Credit Cards, More
A Wayne police officer nabbed three Paterson men before dawn Tuesday with several hundred pieces of stolen mail – including checks, credit cards and more, authorities said.
All belonged to residents of Wayne, Pompton Plains, Fairfield, and Haskell, Detective Capt. Daniel Daly said.
Responding to a resident's 5 a.m. call, Officer David Fox spotted the suspects in a vehicle on Webster Drive, Daly said.
Arrested were Jose Veras, 18, Edward Lopez, 19 and Osvaldo Rios, 22, all of whom were processed and released pending court hearings on charges of theft, conspiracy and credit card fraud.

Fair Lawn Police Do It Again: More Arrests Made In Separate Mailbox Check Thefts
As the amount of checks and cash reported stolen from mailboxes continues to rise, so do the number of check-theft arrests that Fair Lawn police are making.
This time, Detective Brian Rypkema arrested two Paterson residents:
Evelin Fernandez, 39, deposited a $2,253 check into her account after it had been mailed at the Radburn Post Office by a member of the Fair Lawn Senior Center, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
Angel Sanchez-Ramos, 25, cashed a $1,302.38 check that had been mailed at a post office box on Dorothy Street, Metzler said.

A Glen Rock police officer nabbed a suspended Orange County driver with 100 bags of heroin, along with some cocaine and marijuana, authorities said.
Officer T.J. Graziani stopped the car Thursday night on Lincoln Avenue, just off Route 208 and found the Paul M. Sosler, 37, of Florida, NY, carrying the drugs, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.
Sosler was charged with various drug counts and released pending a first appearance this Friday in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
