Two Whales Found Dead Along Jersey Shore Coast, Marine Biologists Say
Two whales were found dead along the Jersey Shore about 24 hours apart, officials said. A dead minke whale was found off the coast of Sandy Hook in the Raritan and Lower bays on Thursday, Oct. 3, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) said in a news release. The whale was estimated to be between 16 and 18 feet long. The Coast Guard first notified the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSEAS) and MMSC about the whale. The cause of death has been released for the humpback whale that washed up on a New Jersey beach last weekend. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center said a necropsy showed the 27-foot-long male found on a Long Branch beach Saturday, Aug. 12, suffered blunt force trauma his his head and neck. The whale is believed to have been struck by a boat — the second for this particular whale: A severed fluke blade was documented in 2022. Another Dead Whale Washes Up Along Jersey Shore
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center was investigating the yet another dead whale that washed up along the Jersey Shore. The whale was still floating nearly a half-mile off of Seaside Park at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1. A MMSC spokeswoman said whale experts were en route to the sighting of the dead humpback whale. A necropsy is typically carried out to determine the mammal's cause of death, and center officials assist in the whate's removal/burial once it beaches. A video of the floating whale was posted on Instagram by Seaside Park police.

A father and son from Pennsylvania got the surprise of a lifetime from a humpback whale while fishing on the Jersey Shore — and they got it on video. Zach Piller, 23, of Bensalem, took his phone out to capture his dad Doug's catch while fishing off coast of Belmar on Wednesday, Oct. 12. That's when the whale came lurching out of the water, smacking the side of the Pillers' boat. "Oh sh*t," Zach yells from behind the camera. "I got that on video!" Dead Whale Found Under Dock Of Abandoned Jersey Shore Home
A dead whale was found under the dock of an abandoned home, authorities said. It was reportedly a 30-foot juvenile humpback whale. State troopers from the Marine Services Bureau North Wildwood Station responded to the report of a deceased whale in the Hereford Inlet in North Wildwood, Cape May County on Sunday, July 10. When troopers arrived, they located the whale under the dock near the Grassy Sound Marina. Frozen, Dead Humpback Whale Washes Up On New Jersey Beach
A dead and frozen humpback whale measuring 32 feet and approximately 10 tons washed up on a New Jersey beach on Christmas Day. The male humpback whale first washed up dead in the surf in Loveladies, but the tide pulled the carcass back out, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said. Boaters are urged to avoid a portion of the Shrewsbury River where a humpback whale was spotted Friday morning. New Jersey State Troopers from the Marine Services Bureau responded to the Route 36 bridge over the Shrewsbury River for the report of the whale around 9:25 a.m., police said.
