The city's bravest arrived at the four-story brick building on Prospect Avenue shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26, to find several residents on the fire escapes trying to flee the second-floor blaze. Flames quickly engulfed the sedan in front of the BP station just after the Sterling Boulevard entrance to the highway, sending plumes of black smoke skyward, shortly after 2:30 p.m. Englewood firefighters doused the blaze while eastbound Route 4 remained closed at Webster Avenue.  Traffic quickly backed up toward Hackensack while rubberneckers slowed the flow on the westbound side. Fire Breaks Out In North Jersey Hotel Firefighters in Englewood responded to a two-alarm fire at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, according to officials. The fire broke out shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Dec. 7 in an unoccupied room on the 5th floor of the hotel, the Englewood Fire Department suspects it may have been caused by an electric HVAC unit in the room. The fire was brought under control about half an hour later, the rooms below on the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd floors sustained water damage. Nobody was injured.

Unable to open the door of the Green Street home, McConnell improvised. He grabbed a cinderblock and smashed his way in, then battled thick smoke to get two trapped victims to safety.
