Each Language Arts class from grades five through eight conducted a spelldown to determine a class champion who then went on to compete in the school-wide spelling bee on Jan. 8.

Twenty-five students participated in the bee, which was observed by the entire student body, faculty and staff. After correctly spelling 10 rounds of words, eighth-grader, Kimira Bracco, became champion of the bee.

Kimira's two winning words were “chauvinism" and "distract." She will now represent East Rutherford in the North Jersey final bee held on March 22, at 7 p.m. at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ.

In the event Kimira is unable to compete, Advika Jalota, the runner-up, will take her place.
