East Rutherford Pawn Shops, Dealers To Report Items Into Database

EAST RUTHERFORD -- East Rutherford could be the first town in Bergen County to mandate that pawn shops track secondhand goods using a specialized database program, reports northjersey.com.

The East Rutherford Borough Council passed an ordinance on first reading to improve the way goods are tracked at pawn and secondhand shops.

The Mayor and Council will have its second reading of an ordinance July 19 aimed at establishing uniform records and reducing the trading of stolen goods, reports northjersey.com.

Several police departments in central and southern New Jersey use the Regional Automated Property Information Database, or R.A.P.I.D. program, which includes information from everyone using the system, reports northjersey.com.

A $300 licensing fee for pawn shops and second-hand dealers is also proposed under the ordinance, as well as a background check and possibly fingerprints, reports northjersey.com.
