Three soldiers in the 15-ton, M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV) sustained minor injuries, emergency responders told CLIFFVIEW PILOT following the 4:40 p.m. crash just south of Exit 16W in East Rutherford.

The M1117 — with a fully-enclosed turret and armor designed to deal with small-arms fire, mines and improvised explosives — was reportedly popular with American military police and convoy security units in Iraq. Its armor is angled, with a V-shaped hull, to deflect rocket-propelled grenades.

Responding were East Rutherford firefighters and EMS workers, the Moonachie First Aid and Rescue Squad and the Lyndhurst Fire Rescue squad.
