Police called to a Rivervale Road business shortly before 2:30 Saturday afternoon found that Benjamin Spanovich, a 39-year-old Little Ferry bagel shop owner, used a screwdriver-type tool to pry off the trim moulding on the woman’s car after she refused to speak to him, McCann said.
“Additionally, a query of police databases revealed that Spanovich was wanted on an outstanding warrant from the East Rutherford Police Department,” McCann said.
As the officers moved toward him, the Ridgefield Park High School graduate “resisted arrest, pulled a serrated knife from his waistband and began cutting his own wrist,” the chief said.
Officers on scene kept him talking, however and “were able to convince him to drop the knife,” McCann said. They then took him into custody.
After being treated for his injuries at Bergen Regional Medical Center, Spanovich was brought to the Bergen County Jail, where he is being held on $25,000 bail. He is charged with weapons possessiion, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and attempted burglary, among other counts.
A Nov. 1 River Vale Municipal Court is scheduled.
McCann credited his officers and gave special thanks to their colleagues from Old Tappan.
