There was yelling and screaming inside when Officers Scott Ahearn and Joseph Espinoza knocked on the door of the Washington Avenue home while responding Wednesday to a call of a dispute, Capt. Patrick Feliciano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
The male tenant told them he and his girlfriend, Claudia Delgado, were having a fight, Feliciano said.
They, in turn, asked Delgado whether she was OK, as state domestic violence laws require.
She then “became belligerant,” he said.
“Several attempts to calm her down and get information from her were unsuccessful,” Feliciano said, so Ahearn went into another room to talk separately with the boyfriend.
Delgado, 40, was still shouting as she followed him — then grabbed the officer’s holstered gun and pulled on it twice, the captain said.
Ahearn “immediately grabbed her arm and maneuvered her onto the floor,” he said.
Delgado “resisted arrest and refused to place her other arm behind her back,” so Espinoza “assisted in controlling and handcuffing her,” Feliciano said.
Delgado spent four days in the Bergen County Jail before being released yesterday on $75,000 bail. She is charged with attempting to disarm a police officer, resisting arrest and public inconvenience.
According to Delgado’s Facebook page, the Wednesday incident was the second time police had been to her home that day:
“So I get a knock from the Rutherford PD telling me the car I parked is in the middle of the street to push it into place lol I told him the car died so I left it.”
An officer pushed it out of the street, she said.
