Dominick “Doc” Azzolini had a green light as he made a left onto Bergenline Avenue from 68th Street in his Ford Escape, which struck Gertrudis Pena, who also had the light, Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari said.

The vehicle dragged the Dominican immigrant 30 feet or so before the Bari, Italy-born Azzolini stopped, the sheriff said.

Pena was conscious but unresponsive when Guttenberg police found her, he said.

She was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery, and was pronounced dead at 3:22 p.m., Schillari said.
