Officer Robert Buell saw the 2011 Nissan Altima continue on after hitting a car on Mortimer Avenue, Sgt. Craig Capoano said.

Buell activated the lights of his unmarked vehicle in an attempt to stop 23-year-old Daniliz Carrion of Elizabeth -- who then aimed her car at his and accelerated, he said.

"She was coming head-on, so he swerved to avoid her," Capoano said.

Then she took off.

An hour later, Officer James Fecanin spotted the damaged Nissan in the same area.

Carrion again fled, Capoano said, this time through side streets to southbound Ridge Road into Lyndhurst.

Lyndhurst police joined the pursuit as it headed onto Orient Way and then into an industrial area, the sergeant said.

They briefly lost sight of the Nissan, then picked it up again -- but pulled back due to the potential danger during rush hour, he said.

"We already knew who she was," Capoano explained.

Moments later, a tire on the Altima went flat.

"It shredded completely off as she kept going," the sergeant said. "She was riding on the rim."

North Arlington police spotted her soon after and stopped the car on Ridge Road.

Carrion was taken to Rutherford police headquarters, where she was charged with two counts of eluding, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and various motor vehicle offenses.

She was being transferred to the Bergen County Jail, where a judge ordered her held on $100,000 bail.
